Rio Grande tomato

in Domestic Tomato
by Radishrain • | | 0 comments
Here are pictures of some Rio Grande tomatoes I harvested on 3 Aug 2019. They were remarkably red (redder than they appear in the pictures). Taste was okay, about like Sausage this time of year. Hopefully the taste improves. I saved seeds from each of these individually. heirloom_...read more

Early Girl F1 tomato

in Domestic Tomato

Here are some pictures of some Early Girl F1 tomato fruits from a plant purchased at either Walmart or The Home Depot, this spring. I zapped and saved the seeds, and put the fruit in the refrigerator. I used two zappers at once, the whole time. My Z4EX, and I think zapper #6 (30khz). I...read more

Brandy Boy cross F2 tomatoes, 2019

in Domestic Tomato
by Radishrain • | | 5 comments
I harvested some ripe tomatoes from the F2 Brandy Boy crosses, today. The one from plant B (which is potato leaf) was large and heavily catfaced with some zippering. The one from plant D (which is regular leaf) had a mild case of blossom end rot. I ate the fruit from plant D without saving th...read more

Wonderberry seeds

in Wonderberry
by Radishrain • | | 1 comment
I saved a whole bunch of wonderberry seeds, today. I got about three herbal tea bags full. They were from less than a large strainer full of berries. I saved a single bag full ago this season, but I wanted a whole lot (so I can share them comfortably).

Matt's Wild Cherry tomato

in Solanum pimpinellifolium
by Radishrain • | | 0 comments
I got some ripe Matt's Wild Cherry tomatoes, today, and saved seeds from nine of them. They had a less strong tomatine-type taste than the ones I first tried, and they tasted decently good. Some of them split after I harvested them. They weren't super sweet, although they probably had sweetness....read more

Volunteer tomato 1, 2019 (probably HCRxSOC F2)

in Domestic Tomato
by Radishrain • | | 2 comments
Here's a volunteer tomato. I believe it's Husky Cherry Red F-something x Sweet Orange Cherry F2. It resembles the F1 last year. However, it doesn't have quite the vigor and production as last year's. The taste is mild. I picked some others on Tuesday. The bigger one here isn't fully ripe, but th...read more

Sausage tomato

in Domestic Tomato
by Radishrain • | | 0 comments
Sausage was a favorite last year for production and ease of harvest/use, and for tolerating hot soil. This year, it's a lot meatier! The flavor was good (not the best for the variety, but it was the first fruit, and I preferred it to last year's first fruit), but it was a bit mushy. The pictured...read more

Jerusalem tomato

in Domestic Tomato
by Radishrain • | | 1 comment
I had ripe Jerusalem tomatoes, today: a small one (riper) and a big one. I liked the taste of the bigger, less ripe one more. The flavor didn't wow me, but I plan to grow it again. The plant was showing some mild disease symptoms: That may have impacted the flavor. Small one: Big one: ...read more

Black Beauty cross (probably with Sweetie)

in Domestic Tomato
by Radishrain • | | 0 comments
So, my Black Beauty cross had ripe fruit by today. I them (there were two). One was riper than the other. The ripest one had a sweet taste to it, in a certain way (not super sweet, but definitely sweet). The less ripe one tasted the same, except with some of that tomatine-type taste (or that's w...read more

Frosty F. House cross F1 tomato

in Domestic Tomato

Here is a picture of fruit from my Frosty F. House cross (it's not representative of the remaining fruit on the plant). It was meaty and quite unlike last year's. The plant is almost a multiflora. other_tomato

What are your favorite homemade spaghetti/pizza sauce recipes?

in Domestic Tomato

What are your favorite spaghetti and pizza sauce recipes? (Particularly those that involve your own homegrown tomatoes that you've canned.) I never really used a strict recipe, but it struck me that there are probably some pretty good ones out there. I usually like to do something like the fo...read more

Buckbee's New 50-day tomato

in Domestic Tomato
by Radishrain • | | 0 comments
I'm growing Buckbee's New 50-day tomato, this year (2019). It has decent-sized fruits with thick walls and mild, but good, flavor. The plant is small and has an open habit (so you can see the fruit without moving leaves or branches). The plant was shaded by other plants; so there was little risk...read more

Accidental tomato crosses with stripes

in Domestic Tomato
by Radishrain • | | 0 comments
Apparently, my Amana Orange and Chris Ukrainian tomatoes are striped! That may explain why the Chris Ukrainian tomato had a different growth rate than the ones I gave away. Amana Orange could be crossed with any of the following striped tomatoes that I grew in 2016: Girl Girl's Weird Thing, P...read more

Marion tomato

in Domestic Tomato
by Radishrain • | | 2 comments
Of all my new tomatoes, this year (2019), I'm most impressed with Marion, currently. It had good, clean germination, and a high germination rate. The plant has good vigor. It set fruit early, and the fruits are a good size. The first fruit ripened by 25 July 2019 (it's been a slow-ripening year;...read more

Galapagos Island (S. cheesmaniae; very early; yellow; cherry)

in Solanum cheesmaniae
by Radishrain • | | 3 comments
Here are pictures of my Galapagos Island tomato, this year, taken yesterday. They were sweeter than previous years. They didn't taste like last year's cross; I think they might not be a cross, this time, after all. This might not be 100% S. cheesmaniae, but it's unique from other tomatoes I've g...read more

Wonderberry color

in Wonderberry
by Radishrain • | | 0 comments
I saved wonderberry seeds, yesterday. I put a handful of berries in the blender, added water, and blended on the lowest setting. The water turned very purple! I don't think that happened last year. Anyway, after that, I removed the fluids (and added more to clear it, and removed them again,...read more

Porter tomato (pink plum-shaped fruit)

in Domestic Tomato
by Radishrain • | | 2 comments
I got some Porter seeds from AlittleSalt of Tomatoville once upon a time. I grew a plant from them in 2016, without black plastic or mulch, in the ground. It got a lot of overhead watering from an oscillating sprinkler. The fruits were very pink, and kind of shiny. They got anthracnose pre-ha...read more
